Emojis are easy to use on mobile. With these tools, they're just as easy on desktop.
❤️ 🎶 🙌 🎉 🥃
Emojis are a great way to share how you’re feeling, or express a complicated emotion… even when you don’t have the words.
And on mobile, jumping into your emojis is as easy as switching keyboards.
Not so when it comes to desktop…
Or is it?
Real quick: Enjoying Free Digital Tools? Help spread the ❤️ !
Today let’s talk about how to step up your emoji work, even on desktop.
GetEmoji.com
Tool type: website
One great way to step up your emoji work on desktop is to go to GetEmoji.com.
Once there, you can scroll, or search, for emojis, just like you would on your mobile device, select the one (or ones) you want and copy them.
Then head anywhere else on your computer and paste them in.
Very easy to use.
FREE or FREEmium: FREE
This is a free tool supported by ads. The ads are a bit much, but a small price to pay for this awesome, easy-to-use free digital tool.
Keyboard Shortcut
Tool type: desktop extension
Don’t want to switch over to a website to find, copy and paste in your emojis. Both Mac and Windows have you covered!
Quick caveat: I assume there are some old OS versions where this will not work. I’ve had it on my computers for years, without issue. But if you’re rocking a 1997 gaming laptop, you might need to stick with bookmarking GetEmoji.com 😀
On Mac
Type in CTRL + CMD + Space and a magic emoji keyboard will pop on on the screen. Here’s what it looks like:
It really does feel like magic.
The beauty of this tool is you can literally use it anywhere, without ever leaving your application. It’ll work in Slack, Keynote, Numbers, Notes… everywhere! Except, weirdly, Google Docs.
For some bizarre reason, it will not work in a Google Doc. I assumed it was an issue with my computer, but I Googled around and sure enough, it’s some kind of glitch. Whenever I need an emoji in a Google Doc, I just head to Notes (which is always open on my computer), create them there and then copy and paste them over. Super annoying, but I have yet to find a better solution (if you do, PLEASE let me know.)
CTRL + CMD + Space will work on pretty much any Mac. But I upgraded my computer about a year ago and my new keyboard actually has a button on it that does nothing EXCEPT open up this emoji keyboard. It’s in the bottom left of my keyboard. It says fn and has a picture of a globe on it. When I hit that button, I can skip CTRL + CMD + Space and get right to my emoji keyboard with a single click.
Here’s what it looks like on my keyboard:
On Windows
I share this with the caveat that I haven’t used a Windows-enabled device in over a decade. So I haven’t tested this. But from my understanding, type the Windows logo key + . (period) and the emjoi keyboard will appear.
Let me know if that works. Or doesn’t.
FREE or FREEmium: FREE
This magical tool is hiding in plain sight right there in your computer, just waiting for you to find it and get to work.
Enjoy your new emoji access.
And happy (almost) holidays.

The Windows trick DOES work!!
You just blew my mind - I changed jobs over a year ago and have been using a Windows device after years of working on a Mac. The Windows trick is awesome!
Thanks Josh!
